This guide helps artists and assistants organise questions for training and induction. It is not a medical assessment or an exposure-treatment protocol.

Understand why the workplace matters

Identify the topics you need to understand

Clarify the incident response before work

Use concerns to improve the working arrangement

Understand why the workplace matters

WorkSafe’s tattoo guidance identifies contamination from needles and equipment and highlights exposure control planning. Look at the actual tasks and arrangements in your studio rather than relying on a general claim that training removes every risk.

Ask your manager which written procedures apply to setup, treatment, cleanup and waste. Understand who is responsible for each task, including contractors or assistants who may work differently from the lead practitioner.

Identify the topics you need to understand

The online BBP course covers the chain of infection, transmission, hepatitis B, hepatitis C and HIV, protective equipment, hand washing, sharps, waste and incident procedures. Use these subjects to identify questions relevant to your role.

BBP learning does not establish that you can diagnose an infection or decide which medical treatment someone needs. Keep the boundary between workplace risk learning, practical instruction and healthcare advice clear.

Clarify the incident response before work

Know where to find the workplace’s exposure procedure and how to contact the responsible person. Ask how urgent healthcare assessment is accessed if an exposure occurs. Do not wait for symptoms or a training-provider reply to seek appropriate medical help.

Discuss what information the workplace records, how privacy is protected and who handles further reporting. This article cannot determine the significance of an individual exposure, testing requirements or treatment.

Use concerns to improve the working arrangement

Raise missing instructions, unclear responsibilities and equipment or supply concerns with the manager. Keep a record of the issue and the action agreed. A repeated uncertainty is a reason to review induction, not simply repeat the same task.

Who gives practical guidance for this task?

Are current procedures available to the people using them?

Does everyone know the reporting route?

How are changes communicated and checked?

Use training as part of this review; a completion certificate is not a guarantee of an infection-free workplace.

View the online BBP course, or ask Skinart about BBP training.
