Many avoidable misunderstandings begin when either person assumes a detail has already been agreed.

1. Starting with an assumption

Ask the client to describe what they want before you offer a solution. Discuss the purpose of any reference images and which features matter to them. A reference can communicate an idea without being a design that should be copied. Summarise your understanding and invite corrections.

Useful questions include: “What do you like about this example?”, “Which part is most important to you?” and “Is there anything you specifically want to avoid?” Keep the conversation focused on a shared brief.

2. Leaving practical details vague

Explain the proposed service, the design or placement discussion, the estimated time and the price or method of quoting. Make clear which details are settled and which still need assessment. Avoid presenting an estimate as a fixed commitment if essential information is missing.

Discuss your actual booking, deposit and cancellation terms before asking the client to make a decision. Do not invent a policy during the conversation or assume the client has found it elsewhere. Provide the written terms through the studio’s normal process.

3. Promising an outcome you cannot guarantee

Explain relevant limitations in plain language. An example of previous work is not a guarantee that every person will have an identical result. Stay within your competence, follow the appropriate assessment process and seek qualified advice when a question requires it.

Use the studio’s approved consent and screening process. Sensitive information belongs in the appropriate confidential record, not in a public comment or a casual shared planning document. This communication checklist does not replace professional assessment, consent requirements or local rules.

4. Rushing questions at the end

Give the client time to ask questions and explain the next step in their own words. Do not treat silence as proof that everything is understood. If a point remains unclear, resolve it before proceeding. Where written care information is appropriate, explain how the client will receive it and who they should contact with concerns.

5. Finishing without a written next step

Record the agreed brief, outstanding questions and the next action in the normal client record. A short confirmation should distinguish an enquiry, a consultation and a confirmed appointment. Check names, dates, quoted amounts and any conditions before sharing it with the client.

A consultation review checklist

Can both people describe the proposed work in the same way?

Are the important limitations and unanswered questions clear?

Have the actual price and booking terms been explained?

Has the appropriate assessment and consent process been followed?

Does the client know the next step and contact route?

For learners, practise the conversation with a trainer using a fictional example. Ask for feedback on clarity and listening, rather than simply trying to finish faster. Communication practice complements the practical and safety training needed for the service.

Explore tattoo learning guides or view available courses to plan the next part of your training.

Improve client consultations with a clear brief, realistic expectations, accurate booking terms and a written next step.

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false
_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false
[39

post-2500","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-skinart-team
["GET
