Preparing a clear consultation handover

Consultation and Communication in Body Art

A consultation handover should help the next authorised team member understand the discussion without asking the client to start again. Practise with fictional details while learning.

Separate the request from the decision

Record what the person is asking for and what the responsible practitioner has actually agreed. Keep an unresolved request visibly unresolved. Do not turn an idea discussed during the consultation into a confirmed procedure or guaranteed outcome.

Use a simple note structure

  • The question or request raised.
  • The information already explained.
  • Any point the learner could not answer.
  • The person responsible for reviewing it.
  • The agreed follow-up route.

Use the studio’s approved form and recordkeeping process. Avoid adding unnecessary personal commentary or copying health information into a general-purpose study notebook.

Check understanding

Before ending the discussion, summarise the next step in ordinary language and invite a question. A signed form does not make an unclear explanation clear. Ask your instructor how the consultation process relates to the documents used in your chosen discipline.

Review a fictional handover

Give your practice note to another learner and ask what they believe is agreed and what remains open. If they reach a different conclusion, revise the note and ask the tutor to review it.

Reviewing consent and documentation adds a practical next step to these notes.
