Piercing Licence Applications: A UK Preparation Guide
Start a piercing licence enquiry with the address where you intend to work and the procedures you will offer. The relevant authority can then identify the application route and evidence it requires. Keep course certification separate from the practitioner and premises permissions you need to obtain.
Identify the Authority for the Working Address
Use the address of the proposed premises, rather than your home address if you will work elsewhere. Describe whether the arrangement is a permanent studio, a home premises, guest work or a vehicle. Different settings should not be assumed to share the same permission.
For England, the GOV.UK guide describes registration of the practitioner and premises through the council. Greater London except the City of London uses a Special Treatments Licence route. Confirm the applicable process with that council.
Wales has a special-procedures licensing scheme covering body piercing, including ear piercing. Practitioner licensing and premises or vehicle approval are separate requirements. New starters cannot begin providing procedures before their applications are processed.
Use the official routes for Scotland or Northern Ireland when working there. Do not apply a checklist from another UK nation without confirming it.
Send a Specific First Enquiry
Give the authority enough information to answer the real question. A general request for a “piercing licence” may leave important details unresolved.
- The proposed working address and type of premises.
- The procedures you intend to provide.
- Who will perform them and who manages the premises.
- Your current training and practical experience.
- Whether you will work at additional addresses or events.
Ask which practitioner and premises applications are required, what evidence to submit and what must happen before work begins. Request links to the current forms and conditions so you can prepare against the actual requirements.
Match Evidence to the Application Requirements
Make a checklist from the authority’s response. Record each requested document, who will supply it and whether it is complete. Do not substitute a generic online checklist for the application instructions.
Training documents may need an explanation of course scope and assessment. Keep the course outline and completion evidence available alongside the certificate. If a requirement is unclear, ask the authority what evidence will satisfy it before paying for additional training.
For premises information, use details of the actual proposed setup. An example layout from another studio is not evidence of the facilities you will provide.
Clarify Inspection, Fees and Timing
Ask the authority about fees, inspections and the steps between submission and permission to begin. Avoid promising an opening date based only on the date you send an application.
Keep a record of follow-up questions and the responses you provide. If the authority identifies a missing item or a condition to meet, resolve it and obtain confirmation of the next step.
Treat estimates as estimates. Training completion, equipment delivery and application processing are separate parts of the schedule, so leave room for them to finish at different times.
Check Changes Before Expanding the Work
A different address, practitioner or service can affect the permissions required. Before adding work or changing a location, ask the authority whether the existing registration or licence covers the proposal and what further action is needed.
This matters for guest appointments and temporary events as well as permanent moves. Keep the proposed change specific: location, dates, procedures and the person carrying out the work.
Check insurance separately for the revised arrangement. An authority’s permission and an insurer’s acceptance address different requirements.
Keep Training and Permission Connected but Distinct
A course helps you develop knowledge and skills; the authority decides the applicable permission under its scheme. Neither a course purchase nor a completion certificate should be described as an automatic licence.
