A home-based PMU business needs more than a spare room and a course certificate. Before fitting out a workspace or accepting bookings, establish whether the proposed setup is suitable, what permissions are needed and how you will meet the costs. Work through the decisions in order so an unresolved requirement does not become an expensive surprise.
Check Whether the Address Can Be Used
The GOV.UK home-business guide explains that permissions may be needed from a landlord or mortgage provider, planning authority and council. It also flags insurance and business rates. A domestic insurance policy may not cover business equipment or visiting customers.

Plan the Workspace Around Confirmed Requirements
Prepare a room plan and discuss it with the relevant authority before buying fixtures. Ask what it expects for the proposed procedures, including cleaning arrangements, hand hygiene, storage and waste handling. Do not treat a photograph of another home salon as an approved specification.
Think through how clients will enter, where consultations can happen privately and how business activity will fit around household use. Record anything that needs clarification. A room that looks attractive may still need changes for the intended work.
Build a Cost Sheet Before Setting Prices
Separate one-off setup purchases from recurring costs. Get actual quotes where possible and label estimates clearly. Include the complete training route rather than only an initial instalment or first course part.
- Setup: confirmed training, equipment, room alterations and initial supplies.
- Recurring: consumables, insurance, waste arrangements, software and other ongoing commitments.
- Appointment time: consultation, preparation, the booked service, records and cleaning.
- Uncertainty: work still awaiting permission, a quote or a training decision.
Do not build the plan around a guaranteed number of bookings or advertised earnings. Compare a quiet month with a busier month and identify which bills remain payable in both. Review your figures with an appropriate adviser where you need business or tax advice.

List the treatments you intend to provide and compare them with your training and assessment. Ask what practical work and supervision are required before moving to work on people. Online access alone is not evidence that every practical stage is complete.

Prepare Clear Information Before Taking Bookings
Write an accurate service description, the appointment process and the questions a prospective client can ask. Use only portfolio examples you are entitled to publish, label practice work honestly and avoid promising that a person will obtain the same result as a photograph.
Keep an opening checklist with a named item, evidence received and outstanding action for each requirement. A planned opening date should not override an unresolved permission, insurance condition or assessment requirement.
