Online Tattoo Courses: What to Look for in the Curriculum

A useful tattoo course outline explains what you will study, what you will practise and how your work will be reviewed. The word “accredited” does not answer those questions on its own. Use this checklist to understand a training offer before you decide whether it fits your goals.

Read Beyond the Module Names

A heading such as “tattoo techniques” can describe a short introduction or a substantial set of demonstrations and exercises. Ask what the learner is expected to do after each topic and what evidence shows that they have understood it.

Compare courses using the same headings: teaching content, practice tasks, feedback, assessment and access terms. Record anything that is unclear as a question. Do not assume that every topic listed in a promotional article is included in the course you are considering.

Ask for the current curriculum for the exact option you intend to buy. An introductory part, a full course and a combined package may have different scopes.

Check the Main Areas of Study

  • Design and drawing: how learners develop and review artwork, proportion and composition.
  • Equipment: how instruction relates to the machines and materials learners will use.
  • Practical development: the exercises assigned for linework, shading and other relevant skills.
  • Working procedures: how hygiene, equipment handling and organisation are taught and assessed.
  • Client communication: consultation, expectations, documentation and aftercare communication.
  • Professional preparation: the limits of the training and the steps needed before offering services.

Treat this as a comparison checklist, not a statement that every course covers each area in the same depth. A provider should explain omissions and the intended level of the training.

For practical subjects, ask whether the material is explanation, demonstration or an assessed task. Those are different learning activities even when they share the same module title.

Inside Skinart’s online tattoo course

Here is a concrete example from Skinart’s Full Course and its study handbook. It combines theory, demonstrations and practical assignments; these are different parts of learning.

Design and stencils

Plan artwork for its placement, then connect drawing and stencil preparation with transfer exercises on practice skin.

Linework and fine line

Study line control and fine-line design, then develop consistency through controlled-linework assignments on synthetic skin.

Shading and tonal value

Connect drawing studies with black-and-grey practice, including a butterfly-shading assignment on synthetic skin.

Colour and tattoo styles

Work through colour practice and explore fine line, blackwork, tribal and Māori-inspired design, traditional, watercolour and colour realism.

Equipment and preparation

Relate machine and equipment lessons to the preparation and handling required for the practical assignments.

Safety and BBP

The Full Course includes Bloodborne Pathogens training. Connect the safety material with sharps handling, exposure response and working procedures.

Practice-skin exercises help develop skills without working on a person. They do not, by themselves, establish readiness to tattoo clients.

Find Out How Practical Work Is Reviewed

Ask what you must submit: written answers, photographs, recordings or other evidence. Establish who reviews that work and what happens when an assignment needs correction. Completion should be understandable before you enrol.

Remote feedback and direct observation offer different views of your work. A photograph can show a result, but it does not show everything that happened during the exercise. Ask which skills are assessed remotely and what practical supervision needs separate arrangements.

A useful enquiry is: “Could you explain one practical assignment, what I submit, how feedback is given and what I do if I need another attempt?” The answer helps you understand the process without relying on broad promises of unlimited support.

Clarify What the Certificate Means

Ask for the certificate title, the issuing organisation and the conditions for receiving it. If accreditation is advertised, ask which organisation provides it, which exact course it covers and how you can verify the claim directly.

Do not assume that an accreditation logo means a course is a regulated qualification or that every employer, insurer or authority accepts it for your intended purpose. Ask the organisation whose acceptance matters to you before relying on the certificate.

Keep these written answers with the curriculum. They help distinguish the provider’s teaching offer from requirements you need to meet elsewhere. This guide does not assert that any particular approval or professional recognition is included.

Check Equipment, Access and the Full Commitment

Find out what equipment and consumables you need, what is included in the purchase and what you must obtain separately. Ask before buying a machine simply because it appears in a demonstration.

Check how long lessons remain available and whether tutor support has the same duration. Establish any submission deadlines, reassessment conditions and additional charges. If payments are staged, confirm what the first payment unlocks and what is required to complete the full course.

Allow time for practice and revisions as well as watching lessons. Our guide to planning tattoo learning time explains how to organise that work around milestones.

Compare the Offer With Your Next Step

Decide what you need from training now: an introduction, structured practical development or a course that complements experience you already have. Choose using the actual content and arrangements, rather than the largest collection of logos or the shortest promised timeline.
