Studio Safety Starts with Sterilization
Sterilization is one part of infection control, alongside cleaning, equipment handling and the working environment. The process required depends on the item, its intended use and the applicable requirements. Use this overview to prepare questions for a trained responsible person, not as an operating procedure.
Key Sterilization Practices
- Use autoclaves: Check which items are approved for reprocessing and follow the validated instructions for the actual equipment and items. Do not assume that every reusable item can be processed in the same way.
- Check the intended use: Identify which items are designated single-use and which are approved for reprocessing. Never treat a single-use label as optional.
- Clean before you sterilize: Use the validated cleaning procedure before any required disinfection or sterilization. A generic instruction to wash with soap and water is not a complete reprocessing method.
- Follow the surface procedure: Use the documented cleaning and disinfection process, including the product instructions and required contact time.
- Review records: Ask which process checks, cycle records and maintenance records are required for the equipment and setting.
Before a practical exercise, identify the written procedure, the equipment instructions and the person responsible for checking the process. If these disagree or a step is unclear, stop and resolve the question rather than choosing whichever instruction seems easiest.
