Practical tattoo training at Skinart

Online learning. Four practical days. Your experience.

You bring

Tattooing experience, a relevant portfolio and the ability to explain your work in a suitable studio.

Skinart supplies

The online tattoo course plus workshop activities and guidance for the practical teaching.

The learner follows

The online learning pathway, with an extra charge for a four-day in-person workshop.

The student still completes the Skinart online tattoo course and its completion requirements to receive the Skinart course certificate. The workshop adds practical time with a local artist; it does not replace the online course or mean a learner is ready for independent work after four days.

Skinart supplies the workshop activities and guidance on what to cover and how to deliver it. You need to know how to tattoo and be able to explain your methods, demonstrate carefully and give useful feedback. You must also hold any licence required where you work.

Read the current tattoo course outline before applying. Fine-line tattooing is included alongside blackwork, tribal and Māori-inspired design exercises, traditional tattooing, watercolour and colour realism. The main course also includes the separate online bloodborne-pathogen course.

Define the venue, teaching scope and local requirements

A useful US application starts with the actual city and state where you would teach. Do not assume that a qualification or working arrangement in one location transfers to another, or that a short workshop is an apprenticeship recognised by a local authority.

Identify your working location

Give the proposed studio, city and state and say whether you own, manage or work from the space. Explain which teaching dates you could reserve without disrupting client appointments.

Check permission for the activities you propose

Confirm applicable requirements with the relevant state or local authority and your insurer. Include artist or premises licensing or registration if required. Course completion and a Skinart certificate do not replace local permissions.

Describe the difference between teaching and taking an apprentice

The proposed Skinart format is online learning plus four practical workshop days. Explain your experience with demonstrations and feedback, but do not advertise it as a substitute for any required apprenticeship or supervised hours.

Make the learner’s practical arrangements explicit

List the teaching space, equipment, languages and access information you can provide. Discuss any equipment, travel, practice or client-model arrangements with Skinart before including them in a workshop offer.

Good tattooing needs clear teaching

A learner needs more than a view over your shoulder. Be ready to explain why you made a design, setup or technique decision, watch a practice attempt and identify a specific next improvement. Allow time for questions and keep practical tasks within the agreed workshop plan.

The four-day workshop complements the Skinart online tattoo course with practical guidance from an experienced artist. Agree dates, learner arrangements and commercial terms with Skinart before advertising places.

Introduce yourself and your studio

Use the existing Skinart United States contact page and begin your message with “Tattoo trainer application — your town or city”. Include:

  • Your name, town or city, region and the studio where you would teach.
  • Your tattooing background and links to your own portfolio, including healed work where available.
  • Your studio role, teaching space, relevant equipment and practical availability for a four-day block.
  • The languages you can teach in and any previous mentoring or teaching experience.
  • Relevant licensing or registration where required, and anything about your premises or insurance that needs checking.
  • The questions you want to discuss about workshop delivery and commercial arrangements.

Send a concise introduction and portfolio links first. Avoid sending identity documents or private client records in an initial enquiry. Contacting the team starts a discussion; it is not confirmation of appointment as a trainer.

Trainer questions

Does the workshop qualify a student to work in every US state?

No. The student must meet the requirements that apply where they intend to work. This page invites trainer applications and does not promise a state licence, recognised apprenticeship, required hours or permission to practise.

Who issues the student’s certificate?

The student follows the Skinart online course and its completion requirements to receive the Skinart course certificate. Adding a practical workshop does not create a separate local licence or remove course requirements.

What will I earn as a trainer?

Trainer rates, responsibilities and commercial terms are for discussion with Skinart. This page does not quote a fee, allocate learners or guarantee bookings.

Can I apply from another country?

Yes. Choose your country below, or contact Skinart if it is not listed. Use the location where you would actually deliver the workshop.
