Bloodborne-pathogen training and studio hygiene belong together, but a completion certificate is only one part of the picture. Use this guide to distinguish course content, workplace instruction and the requirements of the authority reviewing your proposed tattoo practice.
Identify Why You Need the Training
Start with the organisation asking for evidence: an employer, local authority, insurer or prospective studio. Ask for its current requirements and whether it accepts the particular course you are considering.
- Which activity and workplace does the requirement cover?
- Is a named provider or particular syllabus required?
- What completion document must be supplied?
- Are additional workplace instruction or assessment steps needed?

Understand the Workplace Duties
For covered employees with occupational exposure, OSHA’s Bloodborne Pathogens standard requires an employer exposure-control plan and employee training. Training is required at initial assignment and at least annually, with additional training when relevant task changes affect exposure. It must include an opportunity for interactive questions and answers.
These requirements concern the workplace and its hazards. A generic online certificate should not be treated as proof that every employer duty has been met. Review applicability and the complete standard with the person responsible for workplace safety.

- The document issued after completion.
- What workplace-specific instruction remains separate.
Review the tattoo course and any standalone BBP option separately. Do not assume the general tattoo course includes a separately accepted BBP qualification, or that an accreditation logo confirms local approval.
Connect Learning With the Studio’s Procedures
Bring unanswered course questions to the person responsible for the workplace’s safety arrangements. Find out where the current procedures are kept and how you will be trained for your actual duties.
- Where is the applicable exposure-control information?
- Who explains the equipment and task-specific procedures?
- How are changes communicated to staff?
- Who should receive a report of a problem or exposure?
- Where are the emergency and follow-up arrangements recorded?

Keep the Evidence Organised
Create a training folder that separates enrolment information, completed work and the document actually issued. Keep the version and date of any workplace instruction with the relevant record.
