Scalp micropigmentation healing: aftercare and review

SMP pen and scalp dot pattern

SMP involves pigment placed into the scalp with needles, so aftercare is part of planning the procedure. Get written instructions from the treating practitioner and clarify them before leaving. This guide helps you prepare questions and recognise when professional advice is needed.

Discuss healing before treatment

Tell the practitioner about health conditions, medicines and previous reactions, and ask whether you should speak with your healthcare provider before treatment. Health New Zealand’s tattoo guidance recommends discussing conditions that could affect healing with a healthcare provider.

Ask what the aftercare plan will involve and whether it fits your work, exercise and travel commitments. Make sure you know how to contact the practitioner and what to do if a concern arises outside their opening hours.

Get an individual activity plan

Cleveland Clinic’s SMP guidance describes temporary restrictions on wetting the scalp, heavy exercise, heat, sweating and sun exposure. Ask your provider when each activity can resume, including washing or shaving your scalp.

A list of days copied from another person’s treatment is not a substitute for your own instructions. Confirm which products, if any, to use and how to use them. Avoid adding a cream or changing the care routine because an unrelated online example recommends it.

Monitor changes and seek advice

The FDA’s tattoo safety guidance notes that redness, swelling or warmth can occur after tattooing. It advises contacting a healthcare professional if the area is not healing or develops a rash, particularly with fever. Worsening symptoms should not be dismissed as an expected part of the process.

Cleveland Clinic also lists fever, pus, severe pain, severe redness and swelling as reasons to contact a healthcare provider after SMP. Tell the practitioner about a concern as well; they can supply the pigment and treatment records if needed.

A photograph or blog article cannot diagnose infection, allergy or another complication. Seek medical advice rather than waiting for an online comparison to settle the question.

Arrange review rather than assuming a finish date

Ask when the practitioner wants to review your scalp and how to report changes between appointments. Keep the aftercare sheet, treatment dates and any advice received together.

Confirm the purpose of a follow-up appointment and the criteria for proceeding with any further treatment. A planned date and an attractive photograph do not by themselves establish that the skin is ready.

For SMP learners: practise explaining aftercare

In a training exercise, write down the questions a client might ask about work, washing, exercise, products and follow-up. Compare your explanation with the instructor’s directions, and identify questions that require a healthcare professional or treating practitioner’s answer.
