BBP certification in New Zealand: what to confirm

Do not assume that every New Zealand body artist must hold one particular BBP certificate, or renew it annually, because a general article says so. Ask the organisation responsible for your work or application what evidence it requires. Requirements and course recognition are separate questions.

Start with the workplace responsibilities

WorkSafe’s tattoo guidance describes health and safety responsibilities for businesses, including protection of workers and others affected by their work. A course certificate alone does not discharge those responsibilities.

Describe your role, procedures and working arrangement to the studio manager. Find out which induction and training records apply to you, and who checks them before you start work.

Ask the council about your proposed services

Contact the relevant council with the address and named procedures, such as tattooing, body piercing or permanent makeup. Ask which premises or practitioner requirements apply and what training evidence it expects.

• Does it require a particular course or training scope?
• What assessment or practical evidence is needed?
• Are completion dates or refreshers specified?
• Which rules apply to a home studio or rented room?

Ask for the current guidance and a clear answer to your circumstances, rather than relying on another studio’s arrangement.

Check employment and insurance separately

A workplace can have its own onboarding requirements. An insurer can also ask for evidence relevant to the services covered by its policy. An answer from one organisation does not establish acceptance by another.

Keep written responses with your syllabus and certificate. If the requested evidence is unclear, ask for clarification before purchasing a course or booking clients. Avoid relying on promises of universal recognition.

Compare the course with the requested evidence

The online BBP course includes BBP topics and an OSHA exposure control plan topic. OSHA references concern a United States framework; they do not establish the New Zealand rules for your business.
