PMU certification and insurance in New Zealand

A PMU certificate is part of your training record, not a single approval for every aspect of professional work. Keep course completion, external recognition, local permissions and insurance separate. Check the evidence each organisation needs for your planned services.
Ask what completion requires
Request the exact course title, syllabus, assessment and certificate requirements. The online PMU course includes brow, eyeliner and lip topics along with consultation, pigment and safety subjects. Ask which exercises you must submit and how revisions are handled.
Discuss further supervision appropriate to your starting experience. Completing a programme and documenting readiness for a particular service are related questions, but a broad certificate title cannot answer every practical or insurer requirement.
Verify the stated recognition
The CPD Standards Office directory lists Skinart Trading as provider 22634 and includes Comprehensive Permanent Makeup Training among its accredited activities. Use the listing to check the named scope and ask Skinart for course-specific evidence where needed.
The course also describes BAQA-approved training and automatic BAQA registration. A course certificate and that registration are different records. External recognition does not automatically grant New Zealand permission to practise or guarantee an insurer’s acceptance.
Ask the insurer about your actual plan
Send the course details, procedures, premises and working arrangement to your intended insurer. Explain whether you work from home, rent a room or operate inside an existing studio. Ask for written confirmation rather than assuming a general beauty policy covers all PMU work.
- Which named procedures are covered or excluded?
- What training, assessment or experience is required?
- Are further supervision or premises conditions relevant?
- What records and reporting conditions apply?
- When does cover begin and which changes must be reported?
Keep permissions and records current
Insurance cover does not approve your premises, and a local licence does not supply insurance. Work through the PMU licensing checklist with the council for your address and services.
Save the syllabus, certificate, registration information, council correspondence and policy documents together. Recheck when changing services or premises. Resolve uncertain exclusions before accepting bookings rather than relying on a badge or a general statement about international recognition.
