Piercing licensing in New Zealand: asking the right council

Piercing licensing questions need a specific location and service description. Do not assume one rule applies to every New Zealand council or that a training certificate approves your premises. Ask the relevant authority about the actual arrangement you intend to use.
Describe the service and address
State the piercing services proposed, whether the premises are a home property or commercial studio, and whether you work independently or within another business. Explain any temporary or mobile arrangement separately.
Ask which approvals concern the premises and which concern the practitioner. An existing studio approval may have conditions that need checking for a new service.
Request current requirements
Auckland Council’s health and hygiene review information describes licensing and inspection of services that intentionally pierce the skin. Its discussion of proposed changes should not be read as proof that every proposal is already in force.
- Which licence or registration applies here?
- What inspections or premises standards are required?
- What training evidence is accepted?
- What fees, renewal dates and operating conditions apply?
Make the training enquiry specific
Keep the online body piercing course syllabus and completion information available. Ask the authority what evidence it needs and request clarification from the provider where necessary.
A recognition badge or general course description may not answer a question about assessment for particular procedures. Insurer acceptance is another enquiry to make separately.
Keep answers with your setup plan
Save dated replies, application instructions and conditions. Follow up if the response does not address your service or address clearly.
Recheck when changing premises, services or working arrangements. Use the licensing application organiser to keep unresolved questions visible before committing to an opening date or client bookings.
