SMP Certification and Insurance in Australia: Prepare Your Enquiry

SMP Certification and Insurance in Australia: Prepare Your Enquiry

When asking about scalp micropigmentation insurance, describe the work you intend to perform and the training you have actually completed. A course certificate does not guarantee cover or establish that all operating requirements are met. Use this guide to prepare a clear enquiry before committing to a policy or course.

Describe the SMP Service Precisely

State that your enquiry concerns scalp micropigmentation and describe the proposed service in your own accurate terms. Explain whether you are planning a new practice or adding the service to an existing business.

  • Where will the work take place?
  • Who will carry out the work?
  • What equipment and pigments are proposed?
  • Does the intended work include any additional services or specialised work that needs separate discussion?
  • Are you still training, or seeking cover for work after completing your preparation?

Do not rely on a broad label such as beauty therapy to describe the whole activity. Ask how the insurer records the service in its documents.

Provide the Training Evidence You Actually Hold

List the course title, issuing provider, completion status and any assessment evidence requested. Keep a course certificate distinct from a named Australian qualification or unit of competency.

If you are considering Skinart training, ask Skinart what its current SMP course covers and what document is issued. Send those details to the insurer for its own assessment. Do not assume that CPD accreditation, another student’s policy or a course sales description establishes acceptance.

Ask About the Scope of the Proposed Cover

The Australian Government business insurance guide recommends discussing options with insurers or brokers and comparing cover and exclusions. Ask a qualified insurance professional to explain the proposed policy for your circumstances; a training provider cannot confirm another organisation’s underwriting decision.

  • Is the SMP activity I described included?
  • Are there conditions relating to experience, training, location or supervision?
  • Which exclusions, limits and excesses should I understand?
  • Are any proposed additional services outside the cover?
  • What information must I provide before the policy can start?

Keep the response with the quotation and policy wording. A request for information or a quotation is not confirmation that cover is active.

Keep Approvals and Insurance as Separate Checks

Confirm the requirements for your service and location with the responsible authorities. Insurance correspondence does not replace those checks, and a business approval does not explain the extent of insurance cover.

Record each outstanding requirement, its source and the next action. Avoid assuming that a certificate suitable for one purpose satisfies every council, employer or insurer.

Review Changes Before Offering Them

If the practice changes location, adds a service or changes who performs the work, ask the insurer what it needs to review. Check the policy’s requirements for changes and notification rather than relying on the original enquiry.

Keep current documents accessible and note any confirmed review or renewal date. This guide does not quote an insurance premium or promise that a particular course will secure cover.
