Do You Need a Tattoo Licence in Australia?
The answer depends on where you will work and what you will do. Check practitioner licensing, business and premises approvals, and health requirements separately. Completing a training course does not itself grant permission to operate.
Start With Your Exact Work and Location
Write down your state or territory, council area, proposed premises and whether you will work for an existing studio or operate the business yourself. Describe the service accurately: decorative body art and cosmetic tattooing may be treated differently by a particular licensing scheme.
Use the Australian Business Licence and Information Service (ABLIS) to identify relevant licences, regulations and council approvals. Follow through to the responsible authority rather than treating a search result as approval.
New South Wales: Practitioner and Business Roles
Service NSW explains that a tattooist licence allows body art tattooing in NSW. Running the business requires a tattoo master licence. Its guidance also explains the exception to a separate tattooist licence when the premises master licence holder tattoos at those same premises.
Read the current eligibility, documents and application instructions on the official page. Do not assume a course certificate replaces those requirements or that another state uses the same licence categories.
Queensland: More Than One Requirement
Queensland requires a tattooist licence for decorative body art tattooing for a fee or reward. Its guidance separately identifies the operator licence needed to run the business, including from home; cosmetic tattooing is excluded from that particular tattooist definition.
Separately, Queensland Health lists tattooing, including cosmetic tattooing, within higher risk personal appearance services. Check the business licence and designated infection-control qualification requirements. Exclusion from one scheme does not settle obligations under another.

Choose Training With the Requirements in Hand
Ask the training provider what the selected course teaches, how practical work is assessed and exactly what certificate it issues. If an authority specifies a qualification, confirm that requirement directly before purchasing a course for that purpose.
Course recognition and permission to operate answer different questions. Avoid relying on “accredited” or “internationally recognised” alone as evidence that all Australian licensing requirements are met.
