How Often Should You Renew BBP Certification?

Do not assume that every BBP certificate has the same one-year, two-year or three-year validity. Check the certificate and provider’s terms, then confirm the requirements of the employer, insurer or authority that needs the evidence. Refresher learning and certificate expiry are related questions, but they are not always the same.
Read the actual certificate and terms
Find the course title, provider, completion date and any expiry or validity statement. If the certificate does not state a period, ask the provider what its completion document records and whether it has a separate renewal policy. Do not invent an expiry date.
If you need a replacement copy, first distinguish that request from taking the course again. A replacement document should reflect the original completed learning; a new completion date should reflect genuinely completed new training. Keep those records accurate.
Ask the organisation requesting the evidence
- How recent must the BBP training be for this role or policy?
- Does it require a specific refresher interval?
- Which course content or assessment evidence does it accept?
- Is workplace-specific instruction also required?
- Does the requirement change if duties or procedures change?
Record who supplied the answer and the relevant policy or rule. A colleague’s renewal schedule may have been set by a different insurer or workplace, so it should not automatically become your own.
Review learning when the work changes
Calendar dates are not the only reason to review BBP knowledge. A new task, a changed procedure, unfamiliar equipment or a gap identified in a workplace review can prompt additional instruction. Use the task and the actual learning need to decide what to revisit.
The 2022 Hazardous Biological Agents amendments address relevant employee information, instruction and training before potential exposure. The cited amendment is not a universal annual BBP-certificate renewal rule. Confirm the wider requirements that apply to your work rather than borrowing a schedule from another country.
Keep a small, useful training record
Use one record containing the completed course, original date, any stated expiry, the requesting organisation’s interval and the next action. Where a date is unknown, mark it as awaiting confirmation. Add a reminder once you have the applicable requirement.
For example, a studio could record “Provider validity: confirm; insurer training-recency condition: request written answer; workplace refresher: manager to review duties.” This is a fictional planning example. It avoids presenting an assumed period as a legal rule.
When you complete a refresher, keep the new record alongside the original and note the topics covered. If a policy condition is already overdue, clarify what is required before continuing affected work; purchasing a course alone is not evidence that it has been completed.
Choose relevant refresher learning
Explore the online BBP course to check its current syllabus, learning format and purchase options. Compare the actual training with the evidence requested for your proposed work.
If you are unsure which course fits your existing skills, contact Skinart South Africa with your location, experience and intended services. We can explain the training; the relevant authority and insurer confirm their own requirements.
