Piercing Permissions: How to Make a Local Authority Enquiry

If you are unsure what permissions apply to a piercing business, a specific enquiry is more useful than a generic request for “a piercing licence”. Prepare a short description of the proposed work and premises, then ask the relevant local authority to identify the current requirements.

Gather the details before contacting the authority

Start with the street address, municipality, intended services and working arrangement. Say whether you are opening a dedicated studio, renting a room in an existing business or planning visiting work. If the address is not yet confirmed, explain that and ask what should be checked before signing a lease.

List the services accurately. Do not send a broad description of all body art if you only intend to offer a particular piercing service. Keep training certificates and course information available, but first establish which office and requirements apply to the actual business.

A message you can adapt

“I am planning to offer [piercing services] at [address] as [working arrangement]. Please confirm which environmental-health and land-use requirements apply, whether an application or inspection is needed before opening, and what supporting information I should provide. Please direct me to the current rules and the responsible office if this enquiry needs to be referred.”

This is an enquiry template, not an application or evidence of approval. Replace the brackets with accurate details and keep a copy of what you sent. Avoid putting client information into an initial business enquiry.

Separate confirmed answers from open questions

• Record the department, contact date and any reference number.
• Save the guidance or rule the officer identifies.
• List each application, inspection or other action requested.
• Mark unclear or unanswered questions for follow-up.
• Note whether the advice relates to the practitioner, premises or both.

For example, a response about the property’s permitted use may still leave the environmental-health question open. Record that gap rather than treating the first reply as clearance for everything.

Follow up when the proposed work changes

If you change address, add a piercing service or alter the way you operate, ask whether the earlier advice still applies. The answer should relate to the new circumstances, not only to the original enquiry.
